It's That Time: Celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month

Month of May 2021

Every May, the American-Speech-Language Hearing Association raises awareness about hearing and communication by celebrating Better Hearing and Speech Month. The theme for this year is, “Building Connections.”

Hearing and communication are vital ways we experience the world and connect with the people who matter most to us. For many people, communication is not easy because of hearing loss or speech conditions. In fact, more than 48 million Americans experience some degree of hearing loss, and 1 in 10 Americans have some type of communication disorder.

What Can You Do to Support Better Hearing and Speech Month?

Even if you don’t have hearing loss or a communication disorder, there are some ways you can raise awareness about hearing and speech conditions to ensure you and your family members are communicating your best!

Schedule Annual Hearing Exams

It is important to have your hearing examined regularly, just like you have your teeth cleaned twice a year. A certified hearing specialist can test your hearing and identify any signs of hearing loss early. The earlier hearing loss is detected, the more proactive you can be.

Wear Hearing Protection

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common types of hearing loss. Many people are exposed to dangerously loud noise, even if they might not realize it. Any sound over 85 decibels can be harmful to your hearing. This includes lawn mowers, fireworks, live music, motorcycles, and power tools. Wearing hearing protection such as earplugs will prevent noise-induced hearing loss, so you can keep your hearing healthy.

Educate Yourself

There is a lot to learn about hearing loss and communication disorders. One of the best ways to spread awareness is to educate yourself first. There are plenty of resources online that can help you get started. Check out the ASHA to learn more.

Raise Awareness

Spread these tips to your friends and family members to raise awareness for Better Hearing and Speech Month. The more people who are educated about hearing loss and speech conditions, the easier it will be for them to help themselves and others.
